Presentation 1 (15:00-16:00)
Dhanya Thomas(DPRI, EQHZ, Space Geodesy, Program-specific researcher)
Title: Detection and analysis of Coseismic Ionospheric Perturbation Using GPS-TEC technique.

Abstract:
Earthquakes transfer a part of its released energy from the solid Earth and ocean into its surrounding atmosphere?ionosphere system. This energy propagates in the atmosphere as acoustic and gravity waves. As these waves reach at ionospheric altitudes, they modulate the background ionospheric electron density and produce ionospheric disturbances known as Coseismic Ionospheric Perturbations (CIPs). These are observed as fluctuations in the Global Positioning System?derived Total Electron Content (GPS-TEC). The deployment of dense GPS networks has played a crucial role in improving our understanding of this coupling process. This presentation discusses key contributions to understanding the ionospheric signatures associated with the earthquakes.
In the recent past, the spatiotemporal characteristics of the CIPs are explored to a great extent using the GPS-TEC technique. However, as TEC is an integral quantity measured along the satellite Line of Sight, it is difficult to determine the detection altitude of the ionospheric perturbations. To address this challenge, a new detection-altitude estimation method has been developed based on the acoustic ray tracing in the atmosphere. This method will be discussed using our results for the Sanriku-Oki Tohoku foreshock event (2011/03/09). This method has been further applied to the Tohoku-Oki earthquake (2011/03/11). This study not only estimated the detection altitude of the CIPs associated with Tohoku event but also it could delineate the seismic sources that are responsible for the generation of ionospheric perturbations observed during the initial 60 seconds of the seismic rupture. This result will be discussed in detail.

Presentation 2 (16:10-17:10)
発表者:加納 将行 Masayuki Kano(京都大学防災研究所 地震災害研究センター 地震情報研究領域 准教授)
Title: Towards understanding current fault slip behavior and forecasting their short-term evolution
