Here is information of the 3rd seminar of the Earthquake and Volcano Group Research, DPRI, Kyoto Univerity in FY2022 on July 29.
Two speakers are invited to this seminar. One is Dr. Bertrand ROUET-LEDCU, who recently joined the Earthquake and Volcano Group Research, DPRI.
The other is Dr. Hector GONZALEZ-HUIZAR, who is the head of the Seismology department, CICESE, Mexico. He is now visiting Prof Enescu Bogdan at Yoshida Campus.
The seminar is held in a hybrid style. We ask that only staff and students of DPRI can participate on-site because of COVID-19. Your on-line participation is welcomed.

Title:Detecting slow slip and tremor using machine learning
Abstract:Faults can accommodate stress in a variety of slip modes, from dynamic rupture to slow slip events and aseismic slip. Among these slip modes, slow slip events and often-accompanying tremor remain among the most elusive and poorly understood. Unraveling the interactions between slip modes is at stake: while laboratory experiments point to aseismic nucleation generally preceding dynamic rupture, observations in the field are far from systematic, and more the exception than the rule. However, the difficulty in detecting transient slow slip events, either seismically or geodetically, points to a possible observational gap that may explain the rarity of slow deformation detected prior to dynamic earthquakes. In this presentation, the use of machine learning to improve the detection of slow slip events and accompanying tremor will be explored, as a tool to fill this observational gap, both in seismic data and in geodetic data.
16:00-17:00 Dr. Hector GONZALEZ-HUIZAR (Head of Seismology Department, Centro de Investigación Científica y de Educación Superior de Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico)
Title:Observations of dynamic triggering of earthquakes and tremor in Mexico
Abstract:After a large magnitude earthquake occurs some areas near its epicenter experience an increase in seismic activity. However, increases in seismicity have also been observed in places very distant from large earthquakes the moments after they occur. This phenomenon is known as dynamic or remote triggering of seismicity. This is explained as the result of physical changes caused by the passing of the seismic waves that bring faults closer to failure. Besides regular earthquakes, other types of seismic events can be dynamically triggered, including tectonic tremor and slow slip events. In this work, I present observations of dynamic triggering in Mexico caused by global earthquakes, as well as observations of dynamic triggering in other parts of the world caused by Mexican earthquakes, including the 2017 M8.2 Tehuantepec, Mexico earthquake.
