Title: Repeating Earthquakes and Slow Slip Along the Mexican Subduction Zone: From the Guerrero Gap to Oaxaca
Abstract:
Characteristic repeating earthquakes are an essential component for understanding the mechanisms behind changes in slip rate, and the processes that control the seismic cycle. In this talk, I will explore the spatio-temporal variations along the trench, and review the features of previously identified repeater sequences and how their behavior may be connected to: the aseismic slip in the Guerrero Gap; the interseismic detachment of a near-trench block that likely contributed to an accelerated nucleation of the 2018 Mw 7.2 Pinotepa earthquake; and how the large Mw 8.2 Tehuantepec earthquake severely affected the dynamics of the subduction zone. Finally, we will explore the possible processes that the Mexican subduction zone has been undergoing in the past few years.
